How we count.

What goes on the tally

Two things, added together. Everything Christchurch has scanned into Cluttr and booked in to be collected, and every sale someone made themselves and told us about that we have confirmed. Nothing else is in the number.

Things scanned into Cluttr

Counted from the moment they are booked in for collection, not from the moment they sell. Until an item sells it is counted at our own valuation of it; once it sells that valuation is replaced by the actual sale price, before any split. So the number can go down as well as up as real prices come in against our estimates, and we would rather it did that than wait three months to tell you anything.

Why valuations are in the number at all

Because the item has genuinely been handed over to be cleared, and the whole point of the campaign is how much of the city is moving. We say plainly which part is a valuation and which part has sold, we never describe a valuation as a sale price, and the valuation is ours — not an asking price and not what anyone hopes to get.

Sales you did yourself

Added when you fill in the "add what I sold myself" form, at the price you tell us you got. Every entry is reviewed by a person before it counts. Attaching a screenshot means we can confirm it faster; it is not required, and we do not reject an entry just because there is no screenshot.

What is not in the number

A scan somebody started and never booked a collection for, and anything from our own testing — neither is a real person asking us to clear something, and neither is counted. On the sales side: entries that are obviously not a real sale, duplicates of something already counted — including an item that went through Cluttr, which is in the number once and only once — and anything sold outside the campaign dates or outside Christchurch. If we reject something you entered, the reason is recorded against it.

The campaign window

A sale you report yourself has to have happened between 1 Sept 2026 and 31 Dec 2026 to count. Scanned items are not date-filtered: the campaign opened with a backlog of stuff already scanned and waiting on a collection, all of it being cleared this spring, and that backlog is in the number from day one.

Workplace totals

Stricter than the city figure. A workplace total counts only what a reseller has actually collected from its people, at our valuation until an item sells and at the real price once it does, plus sales they made themselves that we have confirmed. Items scanned and still waiting for pickup are shown beside the total but do not count towards the ranking. A valuation is our estimate, not a sale price. We publish the workplace name and total only, never who cleared what.

The charity figure

Money we have actually received and passed on, or are holding to pass on. A pledge someone has made but not yet paid is not counted in the figure on the home page. Nothing is charged to anyone through this site.

Corrections

If we find a figure is wrong, we correct it, and the tally can go down as well as up. Where a correction is applied by hand rather than by removing entries, it replaces the calculated total rather than being added to it.
